Access Control System

Development of the Academic Identity System with access control through installed turnstiles using the “Vanderbilt System” for the Greek Universities. The Academic Data would be authenticated directly from the “ACADEMIC IDENTITY CARD ONLINE SERVICE” of the Ministry of Education

The Need

A Management and Control System for local Access Systems will be implemented in each Greek University Institution. This system will operate through a secure, closed network and communicate in real time with a centralized Access System database. The central database will be hosted externally at a Data Center managed by EDYTE – GRNET.

To enable seamless interconnection between the local Access Systems and the central Academic Identity Card database, a middleware software application will be developed.

The Solution

The solution is designed to trigger connections between different databases and facilitate communication. A middleware application is implemented using C#, handling authentication and governance mechanisms. This ensures that only authorized users can access the system while maintaining data integrity and security across institutions. The middleware effectively synchronizes data between local university access points and the central Academic Identity Card system. This middleware acted as a bridge, ensuring secure, efficient, and real-time authentication and data exchange.

The Results

The system was successfully developed, tested, and functioned perfectly as intended. However, the project was ultimately canceled by the Ministry due to political resistance and student opposition. Key reasons for the cancellation included:

  • Political controversy surrounding the system’s acceptance and implementation.
  • Universities’ inability to enforce student compliance with the new system.
  • Widespread protests, leading to strong opposition and, in some cases, demolition of installed systems.

Despite its technical success, the project faced sociopolitical challenges that prevented its adoption and long-term viability.
